Lecithin is one of the most powerful dietary supplements developed by man. Lecithin as a substance was first isolated from egg yolks in 1850 by Maurice Bobley. Soybeans, grains, brewer's yeast, fish, and egg yolks are natural sources of lecithin. Studies have shown that plant-based lecithin (found, for example, in soybeans) is more effective than animal-derived lecithin (for example, from egg yolks). In terms of nutrient classification, lecithin belongs to the fat group. It contains phosphatidylcholine, which is an essential substance for brain cells, nervous system and liver.

Phosphatidylcholine in the presence of vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) is converted into acetylcholine (ACC), one of the most common neurotransmitters in the body.

Acetylcholine improves human brain activity, increases performance, and promotes the formation and preservation of memory. Decreased acetylcholine production leads to memory impairment and decreased mental alertness and mental activity, especially under stressful conditions.

Lecithin is an essential substance for the nervous system and is a major component in the formation of myelin. A lack of lecithin leads to damage to the myelin sheath of the nerves, which is observed in multiple sclerosis and other severe neurological diseases. By nourishing the fatty sheaths that cover nerve fibers, taking lecithin leads to remission in multiple sclerosis, a disease associated with damage to the myelin sheaths.

Heart has the highest lecithin content.

The use of lecithin for heart attack and stroke is caused by the increased need of heart and brain tissue for this substance during recovery processes.

Lecithin is useful in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis. Lecithin helps keep cholesterol in a dissolved state, as a result of which cholesterol is not deposited on the walls of blood vessels. In people with high cholesterol levels, lecithin normalizes or significantly reduces cholesterol levels in the blood.

With regular physical activity, the lecithin content in muscles increases. This increase in lecithin content in muscles partially contributes to increased endurance.

If there is a deficiency of lecithin, the body cannot process fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Taking lecithin improves the functioning of the digestive tract, since lecithin is part of bile, stimulates bile secretion, which, in turn, helps cleanse the gallbladder, eliminates biliary dyskinesia, and prevents the formation of gallstones. Lecithin is recommended for chronic active hepatitis (a specific form of hepatitis in which inflammation of the liver continues without improvement for a month).

Lecithin should be used with caution in patients with gallstones, as it stimulates bile secretion and may cause movement of gallstones. In conditions of bile formation and bile secretion, gallstones may decrease in size. Lecithin is especially important for the intrauterine development of a child and in the first months after birth. Lecithin, received by a child in the first year of life, is crucial for the development of memory, determining the capacity of adult memory and its resistance to disorders associated with aging.

Lecithin in combination with vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) is useful in relieving and even eliminating nicotine cravings. This is due to the fact that acetylcholine and nicotine act on the same receptors and compete with each other.

Lecithin relieves the symptoms of psoriasis. This is because psoriasis is, at least in part, associated with disorders of fat metabolism and is usually accompanied by high cholesterol levels. And the use of lecithin helps reduce cholesterol levels, which leads to an improvement in the condition.
